Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, October 12, 2012: In an effort to continue to raise public awareness on cancer, Republic Bank Limited, in partnership with the Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society, hosted the fifth (5th) edition of EduFest, on October 9, 2012, at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA), Port-of-Spain. Targeted towards Secondary School students, Edufest is one of the primary tools used by the Trinidad & Tobago Cancer Society, in providing education and information on the topic of cancer to the youth of our nation.
Republic Bank's General Manager, Trust and Asset Management, Karen Yip Chuck, spoke of the Bank's continued commitment to educating the public about the need to embrace healthy lifestyles in battling the dreadful disease.
"At Republic Bank, we strongly believe that knowledge is power, and that education is an important means of reducing the suffering due to cancer. While there will always be a hereditary predisposition to the disease among some people, the more you know about cancer and its causes, the greater your ability to take preventative measures to ensure that you do not become a victim," Yip Chuck said.
Some of the participating schools at the 2012's EduFest were; St. James Secondary School, Barataria Senior Secondary School, Bishops High School East and St. Charles Girls High. There was a number of booths, which carried information on various cancers; including, lung, prostate, colon, skin, ovarian and breast.
Also speaking at the event was General Manager of the Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society, Nicole Jordon.
There was also a live demonstration by members of the Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society, which had many of the students gasping in awe, as they got an up-close and personal view of a donor's cancerous lung and a swine's lung, which is known to be the closest to a human's lung.
The students were also challenged by puzzles, quizzes and Spelling Bee competitions.
Edufest will travel to Tobago, for the fourth year, on Thursday October 18, 2012, at Movie Towne, Gulf City Mall, Lowlands, Tobago.
Republic Bank is a proud sponsor of the EduFest and Walk for Life, which takes place on October 27 at the Queen's Park Savannah, in their quest to effectively combat cancer, the second leading cause of death in the country.
